I wish I could add more praise for Siteground, but I have some concerns.

First I must say that the customer service is absolutely EXCELLENT. No question there. I always receive a prompt response to my support tickets, and I really appreciate that.

However, my site seems to be down quite a bit. At least once a day, we have 5-20 minutes of downtime. The price and service are both outstanding. The reliability over the past month or so has been poor.

I hope this area can be improved, and I do plan to remain a customer for a while and see if that happens.

I wish I could say that this is not true. However, it is :( The server your account resides really had some problems. Basically, the downtime was caused by users on that server who did overload the server with many applications running or scripts, which failed to execute correctly and caused the apache and mysql services to freeze.

We did restart the server to apply security patches which will prevent this from happening in the future.

We try as hard as we can to bring the best service out there and we will continue to improve every aspect of it.

Thank you for your opinion. It is extremely valuable to know what customers think of us and that is the only way we can become better.

We really hope that you and nobody else will experience any downtime from now on

Hi,
Its good to hear that siteground actually put their hands up and admit the problem, I have been with other hosts who say there is nothing wrong when it obviously is! Top praise to you guys and gals at Siteground.

My question is, I notice sometime I get problems with MySQL reading the database that has all my forum user accounts on, but if I press refresh on my browser it seems to work without a problem....any ideas why this could be happening?

It is possible, however unlikely to happen, that the MySQL service has too many connections at a certain period of time and denies further connections. We can raise the limit of simultaneous connections to the MySQL service, but this will result in slowness of service and possibly into an interruption. We have found out that the best thing to be done is:

1. Limit the number of global connections
2. Turn persistent connections off
3. Hardcore limit the users who overload the server to a minimum amount of connections to the MySQL.

This way we minimize the chance of having a connection error to a really low point. Your problem should be exactly this as when you refresh the page, the connections are no longer up to the limit and you are able to open the page correctly. Please let us know if this is happening too often, so we might take some more measures :)

yea uptime isn't as good as they say. Using a uptime checker that checks every 30-60mins I got this

Monthly Report for June 2005
chaoticgaming.net
Service: Chaotic Gaming
Outages: 3
Downtime: 1 hrs, 30 mins
Uptime: 99.79%

I have noticed myself there are quite a few short downtimes sometimes too but that checker only checks if its down every 30mins so its not counted there.

I'm not complaining but I don't like it how its advertised 99.9% uptime when its less. I guess its hard to expect 99.9% uptime on a shared server.

oh and my server has been overloaded quite a few times (like 5 at least) Can't you report the abusers to their isp or something? Or maybe put in your tos that if you abuse it you reserve the right to fine them money? I dunno :/

btw since the security patches I have had no downtime that i've noticed, so thats good.

I have just raised the limit of connections for your account only. Hope it works flawlessly from now on.. :)

I can do it globally but.. It is not a good thing to do...

From what you have provided us as an information, I can see that the page you are using to check the status of your website, it does not only check the page every 30 minutes, but it also reports the your page to be down for exactly 30 minutes if it detects it to be down (not reachable). This means if your page is not accessible at 13:30 until 13:32 - server overload for example, the checker will tell you it has been down from 13:30 to 14:00. That is why the percentige is lower than 99.9%.

We are currently developing a page that will show the actual downtime in percents per every account, and will be accessible by anyone. Hope this would be a useful tool.

Currently, we only suspend the account of the person who overloads the server. However, it is a good idea to report him to his ISP. I do not believe it will help as much as we want it to though, as they are not really responsible for what he is doing with the Internet connectivity they provide him.

We do report spammers though :)

Thanks, fingers crossed it will work fine now. I will keep you posted. This is the reason I have told people about Siteground and got them to sign up (along with the benefit of getting free hosting ;) ) the tech support are the best I have found. Mention a problem and they bend over backwards to fix it ASAP.

Bravo!! Well done....

2 of the times I was there and saw it was offline. One of the times was you patching the servers though.

That would be awesome

Earlier this afternoon (I wasn't on), I had a number of users seeing the "suspended account" page (http://serv01.clev7.com/suspended.page/?id=1), and the SQL database was crashing a bunch. I imagine they were just temporary problems, because everything looks fine now...

Never seen that page :)

Everything seems fine now, I guess it was just a glitch.....

I'm curious, has the tool be deployed yet?

No, unfortunately not yet. The project was stopped somewhere in the middle and have not been re-initiated since then.

I will see what I can do to bring the project into development once again.

Thanks for reminding me for this one :)
