Backup - mambo

What's the best procedure for backing up my mambo-database? And restoring it just in case of disaster? I have downloaded an installed a component called DB admin thats supposed to do the job, but i have not tested it yet.
I'm quite new to php and mysql, have only been working with microsoft sqlserver before.

you can use bigape backup. its a mambo component that downloads everything related to the mambo install into a nice file you can download, including the sql tables. just install the component just like any other component, and access it thru your mambo backend. I prefer to make it manual from phpMyAdmin, the data bases.

By FTP the rest.

dbadmin works well. It will only backup the database structure and content. It won't get mambo itself, or any templates, components, modules or mambots you may have added. It's a mambo component (or is it a module?) so it is run from within Mambo.

I could not get dbadmin to restore directly from a file on my local PC. I had to upload the file using filemanager and then I could use dbadmin to restore it. I had no problems restoring when the backup was left on the host.

I personaly prefer phpMyAdmin too. The easiest way to dump your database is using phpMyAdmin. It also has options to add like 'Add Drop Table' or 'Create Database'. You can also save the db in gzip or zip format, or export it as CSV and open it with exel.

However, a custom cron job can be added, that will dump the db and save the db into a SQL file with a date. This can be done once a day for example and I believe is the thing that suits most of the people, as it is done automatically, and backups are kept on the account itself. They can be downloaded via FTP.

You can always rely on the backups we make for you though :)

I use the component as well. Asa rather unexperienced PHp expert it's easier for newbees to use to component. As probably less possibilities, but everything is done for you.

Hi everyone...

I have chosen to backup my mambo installation using BigApe after reading this post, and thank God I did! I installed the phpBB mambo plugin and it messed some stuff up.. I uninstalled it, and everything went totally haywire now!!! :eek:

The question now is, how do I restore my mambo installation back? I guess the database would be done simply by executing the database backup through phpMyAdmin. The problem is with the files themselves; I guess the plugin altered something in the mambo files cuz now I can't add users through mambo itself; which means I have to overwrite everything (and possibly delete some stuff). I could simply download the backup archive and reupload it through ftp; but I'm hoping there would be a better solution cuz this one sounds unresonable - the file is already on the server so it doesn't have to make the round trip!

It would also have been easy if I had shell access, but then again that's not available! So, what do I do? Shall I simply post a ticket and have the support do it for me? If there would be another way I could do it myself I would be very greateful...

EDIT: Actually, I restored my database and everything went back to order :D . I still wanna know if what I'm asking about is possible, though; I know it might come in handy one day... But at least I'm out of the mess I was in, with minimal damage! I guess I must've uninstalled the forum wrongly or something; I did it from the Mambo control panel itself. Anyway... :rolleyes:

l have been going the menu item by item and doing the copy&paste. l'll be completly grey by the time l finish that way. please help
