I'm having trouble optimizing after I've put in a description and keywords, went to google to register the site, received the verification code to paste into the appropriate field on siteground and it won't recognize it. I don't see my description or keywords in my source. What am I doing wrong?

After fixing your problem, you might also want to do a number of other ways to get traffic to your site. Here are some marketing and promotion methods for your reference.
Free methods:
Submission to SE's and directories
Article marketing
Email campaign
Forums, blogs and board postings to targetted audience
Social Bookmarking
Etc. etc.
Premium ways: (Should require a budget)
Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Targetted Link backs
Professional SEO services
Ad spaces
Offline campaigns
Etc. etc.

Did you remember to turn on meta in your global config? Dynamic titles? SEF?
If you are talking about Google Sitemap you should just be able to add the verification code to the root folder.
