for some reason all my files and folders have been reset to 755. I am right now resetting them all to 755 and 644 - but how could my file permissions be changed? I didn't change them?!

Hello thebizn,

As I can see you have discussed this issue with our Tech Support Team and actually the permissions were changed by the tech team per your request. I will try to summarize...

The permissions of your all files and folders were 777 which is not allowed because the apache web server runs php as a cgi and has suexec enabled. That is why they were changed to 755. You then requested to have all files permissions changed to 644 and all folder permissions - 755. I noticed that everything is now set as you requested and I believe all is working fine. :)

Thanks,

Errors must somehow happen on the server side. Possibly when installing a new script that somehow resets permissions. I know by now not to touch the root folder but one day it was set at 777. I think the request to set it back to 755 was taken too literally and ALL files and folders were set at 755 when obviously folders ae 755 and files 644.

Is there not a better Cpanel file manager? I found that I could only reset the permissions on files one at a time? Doing it all by ftp was going to take hours on this slow UK upload. I can delete a folder in seconds! using the Cpanel File Manager compared to quite a bit of time using ftp from my PC, which is great. A better File functionality would be an improvement?

Aslo I notice that the response from the server using my FTP program has increased dramatically recently for some reason - also great news!

Working from here in the UK connecting to phpMySQL and updating my site content (database interactions) from about 8 till 10 in the evening is still painfully slow for some reason - possibly due to congestion here or in US? Browser connection to the actual site is good however!

Another suggestion - how about a "Latest Posts" summary on this forum? I see some other forums have the function and I can see at a glance what is happening and participate better. am sure buried in the category listing right now there are some interesting/relevant posts but I can't always be bothered to trawl! Also maybe more Solution Stickies (often combined as FAQ posts - as in Joomla forum) where the best past posts on priority subjects - like file permissions - are combined together? At least this forum has the nice useful "similar threads" facility which is good.
