I would like to build a personal web site where I could place examples of my original music for people to listen to and download. Can this be done with SiteGround and, if so, how do I go about doing it? What tools, etc., do I need. I am absolutely, totally new to all of this so please answer as if I am a rank beginner because I am.
Thanks for all help offered.

Welcome to SiteGround.

Yes, you can create a personal site and place audio samples for download.

There are many ways you can go about building your site, but I will lay down few guidelines for you which I believe will be good for beginner users and then you may look at the other user's suggestions.

1. You may user our SiteBuilder in order to get started in the concepts of sitebuilding. The SiteBuilder will provide you with easy and fast way to create a personal web site literally in a matter of minutes.

We have a easy step by step tutorial at:

http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/zen-tutorial/

2. You may use FTP to upload the audio samples to your account.

For more information how to use ftp for file uploads please refer to our FTP tutorial:

http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/ftp/index.htm

This will help you get started.

However, you may also refer to google.com or other external resources for more information about the process.

Andrew,

Thank you for replying. I understand how to ftp an audio file to my site. What I can't seem to find in the tutorials is how to make the file visible on my site so people can listen to or download it. Also, what folder should I upload the files to? I uploaded a file to my public_ftp/incoming folder. Is that the right place? I am using CuteFTP as my ftp client. It seems that most of the tutorials deal with managing images instead of audio unless I'm looking in the wrong place. Thank you.

If you would like to make the files available for download you should upload them under the public_html folder. This is the www root folder and it is the only folder on your account accessible via http. Note also that you may easily create links for download on your website with simple html code:

http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

If you are using a CMS or other website building application you may use it instead of creating the above mentioned html pages with the links to your files.

Note that the public_html folder is available via:

http://domain.com

and the public_html/test for an example you may browse via:

http://domain.com/test

or a subdomain:

http://test.domain.com -- if the subdomain is created. If you have an account with SiteGround you may create subdomains via cPanel > Subdomains tab. Also you may check the following URL for more information about the features cPanel offers:
