I've noticed a few other hosting companies starting to offer Ruby & Rails installations alongside the usual tools and options. Has this been considered for SiteGround?

Hello,
Ruby on Rails is available only on VPS accounts at SiteGround. We do not support it on our shared servers, because it requires the installation of a whole new platform that has to run parallel to what we now have. It turns out that if we add that platform, the load on the machine becomes too high and slows down its performance.

I have found this page http://www.siteground.com/ruby_on_rails-hosting.htm on your new site saying you are now offering a Ruby On Rails hosting. Is this feature included in existing hosting package (such as the one I already have) or does it require a separate account? And if the feature can be enabled on existing accounts, what is needed to activate it?

We started offering Ruby on Rails for shared hosting accounts very recently. The Ruby on Rails installation for the moment is free and you may request it by posting a ticket through your <a href=https://www.siteground.com/login_page.htm>Customer's area</a>. You do not need a separate account, you may have it installed in your existing account (just specify where). However, as this is a new service and we are still testing the customer interest, we support Ruby on Rails on just a few of our machines. This means that if the SiteGround server that currently hosts your account does not support that application yet, we will have to move your account to one of the servers that supports it.

Siteground just moved my account to another server and activated ruby for me. But there seems to exist no further support for ruby yet.
Can anybody tell me how to install a simple rails application?
Which files do I have to install?
Where do I have to put those files?
Do I have to change the rails routing script?
How to configure database access?
Any experience out there that could help me getting started with RoR at Siteground?

Any update to this. I also need to install a rails app on the shared hosting servers and I got the answer from support that its available. I am not exactly sure how to go about doing this on a shared host. I can copy out a basic app but how would i restart the web server or change the httpd.conf file for apache. I am really confused on how this is supported, especially since we dont have ssh access. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it is best to address your question to the tech support team - they will be the best ones to answer your questions and guide you how to proceed.
Thanks,

Unfortunately RoR's support has been discontinued by Siteground. Many of RoR's features require shell access which is not offered because of security reasons.
