Im just not sure because I know alot of people dont run such high res ,and Im thinking this might effect the viewing of pages I make (ie being out of allignment)

Sorry to be a pain in the Butt ...

I always have used 1024 by 768. Lately, quite a few people have told me how the web site does not fit on their screen, or that the text is way too large...

In some cases, it does not matter.

In my case, using "phpwebsite" I have added "blocks" here and there which all look great on my screen, but stretch beyond the limits of other's screens...

Our web designers design the pages at 800 x 600 in order to ensure maximum compatibility without much content space loss. Going below that resolution would be too much, but there is still a considerable number of people out there browsing at 800x600.

Not only are there people who use less than 1024 screen width, there are also quiet a lot of users who have the Favorites or other columns AT THE SIDE of their browser window, thus reducing the actual viewing area. When I look at my statistics, about 80% of my visitors uses either 1024 or 1280 wide (I do), but the majority will NOT have an actual viewing area that wide.

So yes, 800 wide is the best to choose still (until everybody runs on 19" or wider monitors..... and gets good eyesight to go with it..... NOT ! ;) )

Kind regards,
Francois

It also depends who your target audience is. If it is older people then you have to bear in mind that they often (if they know how!) increase the font size of their browser. This can cause a page to look very different from what you had in mind when you designed it :o
