Hello!
I'm new here. I've been browsing tons of forums for an idea of what to do. I was laid off from my job about 3 month ago. I've been looking for a job since then, but did not even get a single interview. I worked as a web designer for a publishing company for the last 5 years. Looks like forum.siteground.com is an active forum with active members and may be someone has some experience working as a freelance web designer. May be "Mambo and Joomla Forum" category is not the most appropriate for this question, but I want to try anyways to get some opinions before I go ahead with my life. I'm wondering if it is possible in the current economy to find work for a freelance web designer and make enough to pay for rent and groceries. I was able to find a small project on craigslist and I developed a website for a company. It was a small project and took me only a week to complete. I got paid $800 for 1 week of work which is not bad. Please people give me some ideas. I have 2 kids and my wife is out of work as well. Thank you in advance.

Well I can possibly help - we've recently made our 'career profile' report free for everyone, so if anyone (pre-degree or post-degree) wishes to find out what their dream career is, they should take our free DISC Assessment (http://www.matiogi.com/disc-assessment-test/).

H iwburke,

You can read this post: DISC assessment (http://8factors.com/disc-assessment-101/) 101 for explanations for each type.

Hope this helps.

I can only give my own experience; I retired and went back to JC and got a Web Masters Certificate. I have spent 2.5 years in the website design field working free lance. Last year I made about $4500. During my course work, I had more than one teacher tell me that it is difficult to generate a 'full time' income on just web design work alone. I tend to believe that is true. This year, I think I'll be closer to $8000. But, I don't work at it 'full tilt'; I'm retired and I don't want to get back into a lot of pressure and deadlines. Still I'm finding that I still have to put in a 3/4 time commitment to keep up with the skills I have and learn new ones as I go.

Not sure that helps; it usually takes about 3 years to really get a business, any kind of business, up and going. Hell, even the government knows that as evidenced by our current tax codes. Good luck
