I am building a retail site using oscommerce. At this stage, I am researching payment gateways. As per a previous post (how to choose a payment processor), a few folks recommended 2checkout.com. My question is this: if you are using either oscommerce or zencart, isn't using 2checkout.com redundant. In osc, you are setting up a database and have the cart software as part of the the osc package. If you go with 2checkout.com, you are using their database app and their shopping cart, correct? I am just making sure I am understanding osc and 2checkout.com correctly. Does any know if this is right?
Also, is there anyone out there using siteground as their hosting company, using osc and selling a retail product who would be willing to share who they are using (and like) for a payment gateway?
Thanks!

No,
when you're using a payment module in Osc, e.g. 2Checkout, you're using the oscommerce shopping cart, not the 2checkout one. The orders are only processed via 2Checkout, and they are also placed in Osc admin, as long as they will appear at 2Checkout too.
At all, any OsCommerce gateway you use - you will never use the gateway's shopping cart - this is performed by OsCommerce.

Oscommerce is just fine, you can modify it with flexibility as your need, its well supported by many processors. For choosing payment processor if you are in US check also with paypal/cdgcommerce and if you are in UK/European union ChronoPay is best option.

My osCommerce site (sweetspiritcandles.com) is highly customized due to the peculiar nature of how you order our products, but the result is a normal set of data in your cart. However, for some reason, people have encountered problems with the PayPal portion of the checkout process.
There are two issues. One is that for some people, it reports that their session has ended prematurely. We have not determined the reason for this. The other is that PayPal does not want to accept the use of a credit card that is associated with the customer's PayPal account. That is an annoyance.
Because of these things, we are considering changing processors.
I have recently had an unbelievablly bad expirence w/2Check Out. They make random and often entirely personally discretionary decisions not based on their TOS. I would recomend using anyone else other than 2 Check Out. My 2c...
Is easy! I recommend it over 2CheckOut 100%!

I use the free Mals e-commerce application:
http://www.mals-e.com/
which I find amazing, but I initially looked at osCommerce, so I am somewhat familiar with it.
I'm curious why the PayPal interface isn't being considered. I haven't added my interface yet, but I plan to use the PayPal interface. You can process credit cards through it at what I'm told are competitive rates. And, I am also told that supporting PayPal is becoming an important feature as more and more purchasers are using it. I often see threads like this discussing other payment processing solutions, and I always wonder what I'm missing. Using PayPal (at least initially) seems like a no brainer to me.
