I've installed the AJAX Chat client integrated into an SMF, and it's working terrifically and I'm really happy with the features. But it's a resourse hog. Even after tweaking values that Blue Imp recommends for reducing server load, with just a handful of active users the CPU shoots up quickly to the soft limit, and the Script Executions surpass the limit by up to 5 times. Before the tweaks, however, script executions were about 10 times the limit.
The software makers recommend using the provided socket server, but this requires being able to execute Ruby scripts. Do I have the ability to do that? I assume you have to be able to SSH in, which I know isn't an option for shared accounts. If I can't do it, the only other option seems to be to contact Siteground to have them start up the socket server, but that's not exactly conducive to being able to stop and start it if needed further.
Anyone dealt with this? Would using the socket server even significantly help with resource usage? Some help would be appreciated, this chat is proving popular with members and I'd really love to be able to use it.
