Most Wanted features (Now Closed)
We would like to know what the most wanted feature by our customers is in order to start working on it with highest priority.
Here is some clarification on the above options:
- More Free Templates - As you probably know we have a team dedicated to creating new templates. You can review our templates gallery here:
- SSH Access - this is a feature for more advanced users. It provides full access to their account/s. We have not enabled it until now for security concerns.
- Ruby On Rails – a great development framework which is currently not supported on our shared servers, but only on VPS or Dedicated server. Details here.
- Backup Option - We have disabled the default backup option in cPanel because of the high load it causes when working on bigger accounts. However, we can create our own backup solution which will be much more effective if this option gets most results in the poll.
- Higher Server Limits - Every service (Apache, Mysql, PHP, Exim) has a limit and timeout restriction in order to prevent server overloads. When this limit is reached, the user process dies. This causes problems to some heavy / slow web applications which cannot work properly on a shared server environment.
- More tutorials and KB articles - We devote a lot of time on writing free tutorials and Knowledge base articles.
- If you choose Other, please post your request as a comment to this topic.
Thank you for voting!
Note: In order to vote, you have to be a registered forum user.
NB Please, mind that the voting time is limited. You can vote only until the end of this month - Feb 28, 2009. So, don't miss the chance to get your most desired hosting feature by voting for it

Backup Option
I would really appreciate a user controlled backup option. This is been a frustration in the past....having to pay SiteGround for a backup restore. I'd rather pay a slightly higher hosting fee than to pay a tech to create/restore a backup.
Thanks for considering this!

I think the USER controlled back up is a very good tool.
Increasing inodes would be nice for large sites.
the KB is large enough in my opinion

Backup Please!

I can already tell. Server limits and Backup are going to win. No questions asked.
May as well close the polls and get working on deploying more clusters to handle the load LOL!

When I vote for backups, I mean FREE backups. Not backups you are going to charge me for.
Other webhosts allow them. I dont understand why SG cant. You all oversell the same amount.

reason is, SG does not charge you quota for your back up. they keep it for FREE.
i fink SG if they allow a FREE backup option it WILL count towards your standard limits.

Uhm no, Every cPanel website I have ever seen that allows user created cPanel backups stores it in the home directory and it counts for hosting storage quota. Then the user downloads it to their home computer and deletes the file.
And how can they charge us for it IF THEY DO NOT OFFER IT?!

Right now they back up our data to an off-server location (like if our server were to catastrophically fail) weekly. This is a free service they do, we just pay for the recovery. Which takes time since moving certain things server to server (MYSQLs especially) are quite difficult.
They would not charge us but it would count towards your inodes (essentially doubling your current inode usage) and the backup process (in the CPU) could be quite CPU hogging (may overload in shared server accounts) so in theory it could work but in reality it could be a mess.
Either way SG if the votes tally up well will hopefully develop a easy to use back up system.

The backups are not free if something breaks and we have to pay for it to be restored. Also, I have referred several customers to SG who had data loss on their server and were not able to get a backup. So I question their data backup.
It wont be a mess. Every other webhost can do it. SG should too. They just try to make extra money off a service.

We are not paying for the data it's self. We are paying for the time that an administrator has to take away from solving open support issues to do one person's recovery. Thus I think the fee is well in line with hosting structure of SG. Another web host may run on a totally different structure that allows this (outsourced support)
Honestly I am quite happy with SG and already have a sort of "Full back up myself" by downloading my entire server root off FTP and then all the MYSQLs manually. Now what would be nice is a button on cPanel that automates this and creates a gzip in the home directory, downloads it to your PC and then automatically deletes it once download is finished. Now that would be cool backup!

SG is outsourced. To Bulgaria. I call that outsourcing. (Nothing wrong with their country of operation. I am just countering the claim. Personally I know that it is a wonderful country)
We are paying for the server space. What you just described as a "cool backup" is how cPanel does backups BY DEFAULT. It is a BUILT IN FEATURE to cPanel that siteground, and only siteground, has disabled. Every other webhost allows it. Siteground went out of their way to disable it and start charging us for the backups. That is what I do not understand.

How are you able to prove, that Siteground is outsourced to Bulgaria? They don't offer telephone support to my knowledge?
Well then, I say we have Siteground flip the switch backwards, and give us our backup ability back.
However, we have to understand, and figure out why they turned it off. Usually a host does not turn something off unless there is a reason. And just wanting to make more money, sounds a bit fishy to me. It has been known, that certain cPanel tasks generate a lot of server load. Such as awstats updating its statistics database. Hence they only do that once a day. Because it creates a lot of server load. Could it be that the backup plug-in, is similar to awstats.? If it is, then that may be the reason why they disabled it.

Most of the staff have their location listed as Bulgaria. All of the staff on the facebook page are listed as Bulgaria.
...Because thats where they are based.
I see *NOTHING WRONG* in this. I am just pointing it out.
They turned it off to make profit. That is the only reason I see in it, quite frankly. Other hosts that oversell tons more all have backups. And the new version of cPanel boasted about how much faster and less server load backups would cause. I thought for sure when we upgraded from cPanel 10 to cPanel 11 we would get backups.

Thanks again for the feedback.
I would like to make some clarifications.
When we offer the backup option, it will not be paid. We already have a paid backup and that's not what we are discussing here
A backup will be 1 inode so this should not be a concern either.
We have not offered it yet because the default backup consumes a lot of CPU usage. For example, if an account is 5 GB big the backup creation will take more than 15-20 mins. During this time the server's load will be increased at least twice. This is not something we can afford. That's why we have decided either to customize the default cPanel backup or to write a new one.
We will do everything to implement all of the features / requests and I believe this will happen in the next few months.
As for the latter discussion about where we are based. Our Technical Support is based in Bulgaria. It is a fine country without a doubt
Lastly, please let us know if you have any new suggestions or if there is something you miss from another host.
