yes,, if you go into global config. and in the "content" tab. put pdf, email, print icon to "hide"

You can also do this on a "per article" basis when composing the article, click on the "parameters" tab, again,, put pdf, email, print icon's to "hide"

Yes, you can modify this. I'm no css guru,, heck, i'm not even a css idiot yet..
but you can assign a custom css to any module.. this is done via going to site modules, then select and edit the chosen module, ID: latest news.
near the bottom you will see "module class suffix" this is where you can assign custom css file/suffix. I can't tell you how to do this as i have no clue.

You can also modify the site css file.

have you been to the Joomla site/forum ? forum.joomla.org
Joomlashack - makers of fine templates and components have a handy/helpful forum also. (I am not associated in any way) joomlashack.com
Barrie North also has a nice template and info site. compassdesigns.net
you will also find Barrie North at the Joomlashack site.. He's been very helpful with some of my problems. and he makes darn nice templates.

    Hope that helps..

That is a valid point, however, always remember that when you hack a core component or module you risk losing your hack on any upgrade.
keep a copy of all originals, and a copy of all hacks with notes of what was done. Failing to do this you risk getting your site exactly as you like it, then somewhere / sometime a upgrade will happen and you will have forgotten what you did and all your hard work will be gone.

Hacks are fine, sometimes really the only way to get something done, just keep copies and notes.
