What's the difference between web development and web design?

On the customer area, offers of web design and web development are made for those of us who need help. The problem is: What's the difference? The problem with nerds is that they expect everyone to know what they are talking about, even when offering to help. That's not very helpful. If you are going to offer help to novices, you need to start from the beginning with some definitions.

Web development refers to application/code/programming creation or modification. You would need web developer to create a web system to which you login, post articles/pictures/etc, add other users and save that information into a database. The development process does not include designing the actual front page. Web development is typically used to described the programming required to construct the "back end" of a website. The back end is the area of the site that isn't seen by visitors, but which does the work required in order to present the right information in the correct format to the visitors.

Contrary, web design is the front end -- the page your visitors will see with all the shiny whistles and bells, dynamic menus, flash banners and so on. It is purely a visual presentation of the data the development process passes to your front end.

One is about the outward appearance of a website whereas website development is all about how it is working. It is includes its programming aspects and other website development. These two concepts are distinctly different and you would not have to be a pro to sort of the differences.

Web development requires knowledge of laguages eg asp.net, java, php etc
where as
web designing on the other hand requires knowledge of HTML, flash, corel draw etc.

Web development is dealing with languages like php, net, asp, java etc. Web designing is dealing with softwares like flash, html, corel draw, photo shop etc. Web development is all about working of a website. Web design is just about the appearance of the website.

This is basically the best way to describe it. Web design = Visual appearance | Web development = programming/coding/hidden function

This is true that many people confused about these two terms. However, I got the basic idea as well from the above answers. I would like to share my views that web programming can be exactly the same meaning as web developing. On the other hand, web design is the outlook of the site which requires the specialized knowledge of photoshop, flash and so on.

Web developer could mean anything such as website creation, app creation, traffic generation, html, wordpress etc where as web design is just design.

As I feel I am a web developer, rather than a designer, I often find myself attempting to explain this to others.

The most success I have had in getting my thoughts across is with the following:
Web developers make things work.
Web designers make things pretty.

So for me, web development encompasses PHP and the backend system of sites, while web design strictly refers more towards the graphical design of the website!
