Hi everyone,
things so far have been moving smoothly until I recently tried to "attach" an 11Meg pdf file to my forum so it would have an encrypted file name and not be downloadable externally ... otherwise I can use cpanel and upload the file manually no problem and have users + everyone else download it - not what I want obviously from the ticket reply below I understand that certain kinds of limits should be set but from what I understand I have to get a Preferred arrangement that would cost me at least $99/month to have - and give me huge limits I don't need ... I'm running a tiny forum so this is a totally unreasonable option to me at this point - I would assume the limits were set adaptively and not statically, but maybe I'm being naive here - would it require that much code ? before I consider drastic options I'd like to know (i) if my timeout issues are merely a matter of getting on a super fast connection (or will I still hang on a large file - I read that the system is set for 24Meg limit), and (ii) is there a way to go through a filename encrypter similar to what the attachment function in a forum like SMF would perform ? either in SMF or here ? I don't get that I would be allowed the time to upload through cpanel access and not through forum attachment function - sorry, but this is ridiculous to me what's the best option for me at this point ? thx ticket message: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- when I try to attach an 11meg file to my smf forum I get this message: --- Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow. Please consult your server administrator for more information. --- the attachment file and folder sizes are set to 20Meg and 500Meg resp. in smf I don't know if this helps but sometimes I use a 56k dialup ... and sometime low bandwidth wireless Is this what they call a timeout ? is there anything that can be done about this at this end ? thank-you Replies: 2009-10-06 10:02pm by system - Note that this is a system auto reply. As you may already know your account is hosted on shared hosting server. The resources of this type of servers are shared among many users. In order to guarantee an equal share for every of them there are certain limits applied. They are set for the best performance and we cannot change them since this can easily lead to an entire server overload and disruption of the web hosting service. Processing large file by the php scripts requires more time and if the file is too large the script's execution reaches the max_execution_time limit set on the shared environment. The solution is to upload your files into smaller parts or to upgrade your account to a more suitable package like our Dedicated solutions. Since on these types of servers you are the only client hosted on it and all resources are used by your account, you can freely change their configuration parameters as per your needs. There are also no limits applied. If you have other questions or comments, feel free to contact us. I can upload a 11Meg file into public_html using file management in cpanel and have members downloaded it directly, but I can't use the "attach" function in smf for such files ?? I'm mainly after the encryption aspect of the "attachment" process - but something doesn't seem right here. I run a very small forum at the moment ... shouldn't this be based on average bandwidth used or something ? any ideas ? thanks 2009-10-07 09:57am by Stanislav.I - Hello, Thank you for the update. Please note that the cPanel Area is set with different web limitation in order for it to function properly. However, the uploading of attachement require higher Apache time-out settings so the file could be uploaded even with a slow internet connection. Unfortunately, the only way to have the Apache settings modified as per your need is to upgrade to a dedicated solution. Please note that your hosting account will benefit from all server resources since it will be the only one hosted. Be advised that as an existing customer the setup fee will be waived for you and your account will be transferred to your new server free of charge. If you need further help, do not hesitate to contact us again. Hi,
Generally, the reason for not being able to upload 11 MB file is complex and involves your internet connection speed, the files size and our server limits. Unfortunately the server limits (Apache and PHP memory limit and timeout) are not adaptive and cannot be changed per user basis. All shared servers have very strict limits and rules in order to prevent CPU and Memory abuses. It is a trade-off to functionality and problems like yours are inevitable. My only advice is to try dividing your file in numerous files with smaller size. You can use an application like Winrar for this purpose.

If winrar / winzip do not work, then please contact again your IT guy to help you. Otherwise, if you split larger files with winrar or winzip and then upload them there should be no problems.
Thank you!
