Question password protecting a directory

For some reason, when I password protect my wordpress main directory (site.com/news/) using cpanel, it will prompt for the username and password multiple times. I have a feeling that it is prompting for the information for each of the subdirectories that my site pulls data from, but I'm not sure.

Is there any way to set it so it will only ask for the username and password once per user session?

Actually, you are required to authenticate for every _domain_ that you access. Thus, if you open www.site.com/news, but all images, css and js files, etc. open via site.com/news you will be required to authenticate for both domains.
