I would suggest that you try out Coppermine (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/). I have been using it for about an year and I am very pleased. It is not a Mambo component, but it's by far the best web gallery software I have seen. It can use either gd2 or imagemagick (reommended), which are both supported by our servers. The bulk add works great - you just upload your image files into a folder under the coppermine directory and than you can bulk add them all.
Should you need any assistance, just post a ticket and the support guys will assist you.

Actually, I found a way that Coppermine can be integrated inside the Mambo itself, without being a component of the Mambo. You can read more about it here:
