Default server overloading?

Anybody have any problems with a shared server here. I am the only one accessing my site. I am using it to learn Joomla. I was told my site was being restricted because it was overloading the server. He said it could be a bad script.

Had the same problem...

The exact same site is now running fine and without problems at another host because so far we were not able to find out what was wrong with it at the SG servers.
The only thing that might have been causing the problem at my site is the module infinty_menus. This one seems to be using a lot of bandwith at my other host also. So far without any problem, but that might have the problem here.

my site has a bare phpbb2 board, and I get the same thing now all the time when there are more than 10 users online.

Can anyone tell us what is going on?

Add me to the list.

SMF v1.1rc2

Uninstalled arcade, disabled stats/logging, frequent optimizing is of no use.

Trying to see which logs and how often to request them.

Any suggestions?

Same problem here. kroeshaar.com is based on mambo 4.5.2.
Every time there are over 30 useres I see the message. I thought an upgrade to joomla would help but apparently not.
I am looking for help too.

Same problem here, just recently I have had the problem, I installed Joomla and I am sitting close to the limit for the server, I uninstalled Joomla and still have the problems, even removed my test Google Map. Might uninstall the Google map mod on my SMF 1.1 RC2 forum as well, see if that helps....glad Im not the only one having this problem!

Thought it might be my 4image gallery but I really dont want to uninstall and try and back up the entire gallery

Its only in the last week I have had the Temporary unavailable error though.

I am glad to see that more sites are having this issue. These are all different kinds of sites so it seems like it might be server connfiguration problem. I sure hope it is and that it will be corrected soon.

Hi Traction,

Joomla 1.08 is supposed to be much less resource hungry, I'm still on 1.07 as I use the smf bridge and am waiting for them to release an update that's compatible with Joomla 1.08 but I did install it on a test site and in debug showed that it more than halved the number of database queries.

I too am worried about server loads as it seems to be affecting a lot of sites lately and I took off quite a few components that I knew used more resources such as mambo classifieds (the Noah's classifieds component uses much, much less) & the ext calander component (haven't found a replacement yet).

When you say your server load is at 86% where/how do you measure it - is it in the cpanel or do you use a module? - as I'd like to see what mine is.

I have uninstalled Joomla and I am still sitting at 85 - 86% server load.

LostinFr, I check it via the Cpanel.

If you look under the General server information heading, you will see a link for Server Status, have a look, I would be interested to see what yours is sitting at.

I hadnt checked the load before I was having problems so I cant say what "normal" load for my site was but I would prefer the yellow flashing icon to change to green!

This is what I am running on site just now - SMF 1.1 RC2, 4Images gallery (which I have taken all links off so no-one can access it). and that is it!! I have about 20 users a day on the forum, and maybe 4 or 5 people on the gallery a day. You cant tell me that this has caused the overload!

I was informed that my site was subject to an "attack" but that has now been sorted but I am still sitting on 86% server load.

What server load is everyone else sitting at??

Owain.

Hi,
My cpanel say's Server Load 1.43 (2 cpus)
I'm running:
Joomla 1.07
SMF 1.0.6 (no mods & bridged to Joomla)
Coppermine 1.43 (bridged with SMF)

Does the server load just apply to our own sites or is it an indication of the whole server i.e. the load of all the sites hosted on it - if so what server are you on?

Sorry, my mistake!!

The 85% is my disk capacity!

I thought that was something to do with my server load.....

I apologise for my mistake and thank SG for explaining everything to me.

My server info is Server Load 3.61 (2 cpus) just now with a nice Green light next to it

I have tried deleting files on my server and it still stays at 85%. I guess its 85% of the charged drive.

I posted a ticket the other day regarding the server overload and for the first time it took them longer than 30mins to get back to me, more like 5 hours, I guess they are just really busy, Im sure if you speak to them they will reactivate your account, SG are the most understanding host I have ever used, if you explain things to them they usually listen and come to an arrangement so that you can get your site running again.

Maybe worth changing your passwords on your accounts just to make sure no-one else is sending mass emails for you, the other option is moving your forum over to SMF instead of phpBB, you never know, it could be a security issue with phpBB.

Well I am getting ther server overload again!

I checked my online stats and already this month my site has spent 50% of its time with a 503 server busy error!

I cant work out why because I am not running anything new, I am not getting any more hits than usual but the site is still over loading, could it be due to another site who is also sharing the same server??

Hi everyone,

First let me explain why you are getting the error messages and what we have done to help you.

Recently, we have implemented an automatic server monitoring system. Whenever there is server overload, this system detects which particular account is _overloading_
the server and automatically limits the resources available for that site.

As a result the server stays up, and we have less server problems. In fact, last month the total server uptime was 99.95 percent...

Now, what we do to help restricted sites:

When we see that a site has been restricted, we migrate it to a spare server of ours. That server is more powerful and hosts just a few accounts, and has almost no restrictions.

The migration usually resolves the abovementioned problems. However, we can't move the overloading site immediately because the process is quite complex. This usually takes us about 24 hours, and during that time the sites might display 503 errors.

For example, traction's site has been migrated and I think that the site is working fine now?

If your site is displaying these errors and you have nto been contacted, please post a ticket - the issue will be resolved as quickly as possible.

Btw, the 85% full harddrives mentined above are backup harddrives, and it is normal that they are kept full.

Server load below 10 is OK. Server load above 10 means that the sites will open slower, server load above 15 means that the server will be almost inaccessible.

Hope this helps,
Mike
