Default SMF integration

Ok, another question. We have a forum running SMF 1.1 RC2 and we would want to intergrate this in to Joomla. Is it possible to integrate with a currently running forum? Is running on 1.1 RC2 going to be a problem?

Hi,

SMF-Joomla component is said to be used both on Joomla CMS and SMF Forum sites. So, such an integration is possible.

Please, take a look at SiteGround Joomla tutorial - Joomla-SMF integration for more details.

Hi,
I read your instructions on the SG site but it is saying to install the SMF forum on top of the Joomla database, the problem is, our forum is already running and it would be more like installing Joomla on to the SMF database, is this still possible?

Default Joomla-SMF to SMF forum site

Yes, it is possible.
You need to do the following:
-->Suppose you SMF installation is in your main (root, www) folder.

1. Move your SMF forum to a subfolder called 'Forum' for instance
2. Install Joomla in your main folder
3. Install the Joomla-SMF component
4. Indicate within the component code that your SMF installation is in the folder called: 'yourdomain.com/forum'
5. Create a link in your Joomla menu to your Forum

And you are done! Your site will now load the Joomla installation and you will have a link to your forum from your Joomla menu

Ok, my forum is currently located in /community so I guess it will be ok there.

I have got Joomla installed on /cms just now, I guess I will need to install it in the root directory before I can use the joining component?

Thanks for your help Kate.

I would also like to integrate SMF with Mambo but was under the impression that they needed to be installed using the same mysql database.

Yes, you are right. Mambo and SMF should use the same MySQL database in order to be integrated.

Please, take a look at our Joomla tutorial (Mambo is almost the same as Joomla) - Joomla-SMF integration for detailed instructions how to have Mambo and SMF into one.

Hi,
You can use separate databases (I do) but you need to use the official smf / joomla bridge available from the smf support forum here: http://www.simplemachines.org/commun...?topic=25718.0
Personally I prefer this bridge as it doesn't modify any core files of either smf or joomla which makes updating either of them much simpler.

You can install it even if your forum is already established - existing members are added to Joomla (or Mambo) the first time that they login. You can also easily integrate a coppermine gallery (also on it's own database if wanted) then your users can have one login for all.

I wish I had used coppermine instead of 4Images, I have a lot of images in 4Images and I cant find a convertion tool to move everything over to coppermine

I should really get working on my Joomla template again, just dont seem to have the time these days!

Thanks for the link to the SMF bridge thread....very handy, its exactly what I was wanting to do
